Nicom ltd. and novus consulting group join forces with national firms
november 25 , 2002 Halifax, Nova Scotia
Two Halifax based consulting firms, Novus Consulting Group and Nicom Ltd., have signed a memorandum of understanding with two Ottawa based consulting firms, The Halifax Group and Transpolar Technology Corporation, to work as a team towards obtaining business targeting the federal government's $5 billion Government On-Line initiative.
A speech from the Throne set the ambitious target of "By 2004, our goal is to be known around the world as the government most connected to its citizens, with Canadians able to access all government information and services online at the time and place of their choosing". This initiative is now known as Government On-Line (GOL). It is anticipated that the federal government will spend $5 billion over the next three to five years with suppliers on this initiative.
Many of the GOL projects will require a wide-variety of skill-sets and experience levels. "By combining our resources, we feel we can provide a very comprehensive and experienced team to any GOL project" said David Nicholson, President of Nicom Ltd.
To be eligible to work on GOL projects, each of the firms had to pass a very extensive pre-qualification process that ensures the firm has the skills, experience, and procedures necessary to successfully implement projects of this nature.

TopLocal company selected to develop new port revenue and tracking system for the saint john port authority
march 25 , 2002 Halifax, Nova Scotia
A local information technology company, Nicom Ltd., was recently selected by the Saint John Port Authority to develop a new computerized Port Operations and Revenue Tracking (P.O.R.T.) system for the Authority.
The new P.O.R.T. system will manage all revenue and operating functions for the Authority. P.O.R.T. will include a computerized graphical map of the harbour showing where each vessel is located with the added ability to select a vessel and see detailed information about each vessel, its cargo, etc.
The P.O.R.T. system will also perform all of the billing for Port tariffs and include an integrated module for managing all leases. Statistical reporting on the vast amount of information flowing through the port is also a major component of this new program. Many features of the new system will be accessible through the Internet providing a new level of information collection and retrieval to the Authority.
"We are very enthusiastic about the development of our new system, as Nicom is working directly with our staff to develop a comprehensive user-friendly system with significantly enhanced capabilities" said Ralph Seely, Vice-President of Finance and Administration at the Authority.
The Saint John Port Authority used a rigorous approach when selecting a firm to partner with for this very important system. Software development firms from across North America submitted proposals. "Needless to say, we were especially pleased to be chosen for this project since we were being compared to many of the best software development firms around" said David Nicholson, President of Nicom Ltd.
The new P.O.R.T. system is currently in development and the Authority plans to go live with the new system in September.
